How do horror movies affect a person’s psyche?

There are many people who love watching horror movies. They are attracted by the mystery and the expectation of something. The first film in this genre was shot by Georges Melz in 1896. Now movies are available to every person online. But is there at least some benefit from watching these terrible movies? You will be surprised, but there is! This is a good way to overcome phobias. A person who is afraid of something at the sight of it will get used very often and the fear will decrease.

For example, Alfred Hitchcock embodied his childhood fears in scary movies. He first used cinema as a means of overcoming phobias. Films in this genre are most often watched by people who want to overcome their fears.

But there are also disadvantages to watching horror movies. Our body does not distinguish the real danger from the one on the TV screen, so when a maniac with a knife is running towards us, our body turns on the “danger near” mode. Thanks to this regime, antibodies tend to destroy the healthy cells of the body.

So, “the inability to remove aggression leads to the fact that a person develops hypertensive and peptic ulcer diseases, increases the likelihood of a heart attack, stroke, and even a migraine.”

In 2011, a study was conducted that showed how horror films affect children. For a week, children and their parents watched a horror film 30 minutes a day. Children became more nervous, aggressive, some even began to use force to achieve the goal. Also, children began to copy the actions of movie characters during games with peers. One girl began to use curses when communicating with other children. And the most important thing is that the children’s sleep worsened, became restless.

After the experiment, all parents forbade their children to watch such films.

The influence of horror films on the psyche depends on the age and stress tolerance of the viewer.

But still there is a list of films that have crossed all facets and are dangerous not only for the psyche of children, but also for adults.

1. “A Serbian film”. This disgusting film was banned in 46 countries.

2. “Cannibal holocaust”. The name speaks for itself.

3. “Irreversible”. 2002 film showing the longest rape scene of the time

4. “Faces or death”. The film is banned in more than 10 countries.
